Commissioned by Trapcode to showcase Mir. Made by POTEMKIN.
POTEMKIN notes: “This low poly semi-epic child hood tribute space saga called EXODUS was born when Peder Norrby asked us to make a short film using Trapcode MIR. We accepted the challenge, made up a multi part narrative and went to work, letting the plugin affect both our creative, narrative and technical results.
This is the first part of a space epic, establishing the protagonists and a fragment of the universe as well as the timeline in which EXODUS takes place.”

- I recently purchased Trapcode MiR for a soft drink commercial. There are some really great effects that you can achieve using the plugin/preset. This piece was very inspiring and caught my eye immediately. It reminds me of the last years trending low poly design. What do you think?

I can’t believe I”m doing this.

After my modeling workshop class I told myself I’d never do a car ever again.
But, for some reason I just wasn’t happy without giving it one more shot.
So far I’m pretty stoked with my results. I’ve learned a lot about modeling and Cinema 4D as well as some useful shortcuts for modeling cars.

Tips When Modeling Cars:

1. Break down simplest shape -> then subdivide

2. Once you have the car shape -> break down into sections (i.e. door or a window) then split the poly faces to new object. Refine those faces and objects making them look pristine. Also, make sure you extrude them to give them depth. That is tricky in Cinema because there isn’t a thickness extrude feature like Maya.

3. Details, Details, Details -> It’s all in the details, I think for this piece the items on the hood and the simple canvas straps really help sell this silhouette as believable and real.

4. Take breaks and look at cars -> It’s ok to get pissed off at this workflow. Let’s face it, it’s daunting and quite frankly sucks. I went through several hours of pandora and two audio books. But, it’s ok to walk away from it… Just find motivation to come back and fight through that feeling. Example: I was getting very frustrated with the rear end of the car. I walked away from it for about two days and came back and worked on another section. That really seemed to help me move forward. I found motivation in completeing another section and felt confident enough to begin tackling harder sections.

So far I’ve managed to complete the VW in a little under 14 days.
Above is my current work in progress.
Final touches will include:  Seats, Steering Wheel, Passenger safety handle, Tires and Rims and then we are on to adding textures and materials.
I wanted to continue to share some of the images I’ve rendered to show you the progress.
Take a look at the previous post to see where I was roughly one week ago today.
I’ll post once more later once the final spot is finished and probably post the model for everyone to have for their own collection.

Ryan Leslie – Live from the Republic

Project name: Ryan Leslie – Live from the Republic
Client: Ryan Leslie Singer/Songwriter
Animators: Matt Nikkila
3d Modeling/Animation: Matt Nikkila
Compositing: Matt Nikkila
Programs: Cinema 4D, After Effects, Optical Flares

This is a project I was commissioned to work on for a fundraising event hosted by Singer Songwriter Ryan Leslie.
Click here to check out the event details.
I took their logo and reanimated it for the event, to be used as a bumper or for anything else they may need.
I’m still working with the client to finalize sound edit and final cut. But I think it turned out quite nice.
I learned some pretty cool shortcuts for rendering HDRI and Lights in Cinema on this project.
I think it needs sounds how about you?

Turbulent Visions

Project name: Turbulent Visions
Client: DePaul University
Animators: Bluelight Crew + Matt Nikkila
3d Modeling/Animation: Matt Nikkila
Compositing: Matt Nikkila
Up resolution/ editing: Matt Nikkila

This is a project we started in 2009 – 2010 in a class called Project bluelight. Lisa Barcy was our faculty advisor and guided us on our exploration through stop motion. We collaborated in a group of 10 – 18 students to create a short animation within one months time. We used cut out characters that we then colored in with markers. Many of us on this project shared tasks. I was put in charge of art direction. However, we all had equal input regarding the outcome of the final submission. The piece is intended to act as a installation. Ideally someone would sit down in a gallery or theater at a seat intended to look like a plane. The would watch the animation play on a rear projection next to them as if they were watching the movie unfold first hand.

This is the final submission for festival review and has already been accepted into various festivals.
