Floaties baby… Floaties

You probably didn’t get my personal inside joke/ movie reference from swingers. “Vegas baby, Vegas!” Now I feel stupid.

Recently, I was working on a project that required floaties or micro floaties or dust particles. Whatever you want to call them the scene needed them. The shot was faking the frozen moment found here. More recently The Other Guys had a cool variation of the same shot. However, to help sell the illusion of the shot they used 3D elements composited in the frame. Our budget and time frame is much smaller, thus we were not able to add in any elements.

During production the director Hamzah Jamjoom decided that it would be best to have the actors go through the motion and call “freeze” moments. Most instances such as the one on the link provided use several cameras. However, small budgeted films can’t afford the technology so often times interesting/clever tricks are employed to create the same effects with only one or two cameras. Our shot was done with only one red camera.

Anyway, Check out Quba’s site. It has been a “go to” site for me for awhile. Lot’s of really cool inspiration and stuff can be found on his page. Also, check out his reel… VERY IMPRESSIVE! I used this technique from his presets to get our look that we wanted.
